Mary Shelley, The Last Man

The latest addition to the Dunyazad Library: The Last Man by Mary Shelley. This may be the most depressing book that’s ever been written – a book that you will not forget, even though you might want to. A tale of love, death, futility and the end of all human life – a hymn to humanity, its hopes and its achievements, and a dirge at its grave that offers no consolation.

(130 years later, Nevil Shute told a somewhat similar story in On The Beach, but there the reader can at least find comfort in the knowledge that it is a cautionary tale, a warning that mankind can bring its end upon itself through nuclear war, written in the hope that it will not happen – no such comfort, no message to be heeded, no way out, can be found in Mary Shelley’s tale – a unique dark masterpiece.)
Free, of course, and, as always, PDF, epub, mobi and plain text.

Also, there’s now a guestbook at the Dunyazad Library – http://gbook.dunyazad-libary.net – where you still have the chance to be the first one to leave a comment!
