I have two basic use cases for the AirPods rather than my normal wired headphones (both have batteries since they are noise canceling and thus help me to keep what little sanity I may have)
1) working out. Wired headphones are not very good for working out.
2) using for hands free phone calls. I don't have to try to keep my cats from trying to play with the wire while I'm talking on the phone.
They also come in handy in restaurants when the people at the table next to mine are not using their indoor voices.
