The basic Light Proof grammar doesn't need Java, which really slows Writer. I think the Language Tool does.
Easy to add:
Code:
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-lightproof-en
You do have to go to Extensions Manager, select "Lightproof grammar checker" and click on options to turn on most of the useful options.
It doesn't realise "had had" is a valid construction.

As I wrote, it's all sorted. I have dictionaries for each series, so I have Bookmark on the Caja filebrowser to libreoffice profile in "Home" (.config/libreoffice/4/user on my system) all the dictionaries are in "wordbook", so I back them up and also copy them to my netbook. I usually take it rather than laptop if editing outside home and later going shopping. I don't want my main laptop stolen.

You only have to edit the header to transfer dictionaries between MS Word <-> LO Writer, at least on older versions of Word.
