I will nominate
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.
Not only is it one of my eldest daughter's favorite books it is one of mine. This is also the first book that I
ever read on my own. Well, my mother started reading it to me at bed time one chapter a night. After about 2 or 3 days that was
unacceptable. I ended up finishing it on my own the next day. I've been hooked on reading ever since.

Quote:
Narnia .... a land frozen in eternal winter ... a country waiting to be set free.
Four adventurers step through a wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia -- a land enslaved by the power of the White Witch. But when almost all hope is lost, the return of the Great Lion, Aslan, signals a great change ... and a great sacrifice.

Recently this book has been called the second book in the Chronicles of Narnia but it was the first published book. And more to the point, it is a much better read than the chronologically first book
The Magician's Nephew.
