This book is a collection of gnostic texts that fit (or are similar enough to) the literary type of "gospel":
- The Gospel of Thomas with the Greek Gospel of Thomas fragments
- The Gospel of Mary
- The Gospel of Philip
- The Gospel of Truth by Valentinus
- The Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit or the Egyptian Gospel
- The Secret Book of John
- The Secret Book of James
- The Book of Thomas
- The Dialogue of the Savior
- The Second Discourse of Great Seth
- The Book of Baruch by Justin
- The Round Dance of the Cross
Marvin Meyer is the editor of
The Nag Hammadi Scriptures and indeed, the first ten of the twelve included texts are in that book as well.
The Book of Baruch is a book for which we have no surviving manuscripts, but which was argued against so thoroughly by Hippolytus in his
Refutation of All Heresies that the text can be more-or-less completely reconstructed. Note that this is not the book of Baruch from the Catholic Apocrypha.
The Round Dance of the Cross is a hymn that is contained within another gnostic work known as
The Acts of John.
The Acts of John (including this excerpt) is included in Bart Ehrman's
Lost Scriptures, but in a different translation.
Since I have the other books mentioned (
The Nag Hammadi Scriptures was $1.99 about six months ago), the regular price of $9.49 is kind of steep for the little bit of new material. I can justify $2, though.
