FWIW, the Sally Lockheart books from Pullman are very different as compared to the His Dark Materials trilogy. They can be taken as straightforward mysteries, though as you'd expect there's a bit more going on. I've had them on my TBR for a re-read for a couple of months, but haven't gotten to them yet.
