There's a firmware patch called "Freedom to advanced fonts control" that allows the boldness of side-loaded fonts to be adjusted in the same manner as the built-in Kobo fonts.

Before I discovered this patch I found both Bookerly and Literata to be far too light for my taste, and instead preferred Caecilia and Amasis.
