If 64 bit and/or more memory doesn't provide what you want, then:

Some Android DOCX viewer apps have the equivalent of Word's Navigation panel - ToC viewer. I don't know if iOS DOCX reader apps (e.g. Pages) have that feature, but I'd be surprised if they didn't. If all else fails Word for iOS is free.

Added: IMO: if you're reading on iOS or Android there is no point jumping through elaborate conversion and editing processes just so you can use a particular viewer app - its often much easier to get a different app that can read the original format.
