Waterproofing. Aside from a couple of Kobo models, most SD cards aren't removable anyway. 8GB of internal storage (the norm now) is plenty for most users. I have an old Kobo Aura that has an SD card slot. I have a 16GB card in there and after five years of use, not bothering to delete read books, only adding new stuff, I've used 3.88GB.
Waterproofing makes the device feel more rugged.
A plastic substrate would be good for that too, but one thing at a time and waterproofing seems it gives the PR team more to crow about, so it'll likely happen first.
