I use Windows Search and the DSR plugin. IMO learning the the basics of MS's Advanced Query Syntax is well worth the effort - e.g. type:pdf counter will limit the search for "counter" to PDFs. I use Adobe's PDF iFilter, even though i don't use Acrobat.
