Ha. My incident today was ‘in a book’ when it went to sleep. I don’t think it matters what state the Kindle is in.

I repeat: I want nothing to do with exchanging my Kindle. I am happy with the one I have. As I said I doubt it is hardware, or it would happen much more frequently.

My working hypothesis is that it might have something to do with the magnetic sensor getting triggered in unexpected ways. I don’t use a cover, and my Scott-E-vest has several magnets near the inside pocket I put the kindle in (to help stuff from falling out of outside pockets). And today I think I put it down on top of an eyeglass case with magnet. I wish there were a setting to disable the sensor (even with a cover, the device can jiggle around in transport and cause waking, power drain — I’d like iPads to have one for that reason as well). But even if theory is correct, the wake-up issue does not happen often enough to be a bother.
