Also keep in mind that using the default ini files is no guarantee that those defaults aren't getting corrupted as well. We clearly haven't tracked down all the possibilities that can cause ini corruption, so something you do as part of your regular routine (that we haven't stumbled across yet) could have already corrupted those default preference files.
The one thing we know for sure is that ini file corruption DOES cause massive performance issue with the recent versions.
