I guess this isn't exactly a meteorological phenomenon but...

... we just had an earth tremor here. Very tiny, only 4.7 on the richter scale. But it was exciting. I live in an old and crumbling two storey brick building and I could hear the brickwork grinding away. I thought for a second the walls might collapse, but they didn't.

It was exciting for me because it's only the second tremor I've experienced. The first time was in a hotel room in Manila. That was strong enough to shake me off my feet and make the venetian blinds sway violently and smash against the window frames. I recall going down to reception and asking about it. The reception staff flatly denied there had been an earthquake. I guess they didn't want a foreign guest whining and blaming the hotel and demanding a refund.
