Yeah, in the United States, "coffee cake" describes the purpose, not part of the ingredients.

I suppose that cake made using coffee is common in Portugal?

I am almost certain that I have eaten a cake in the United States that is made with coffee. I would suggest that you try a Starbucks store--I'm almost certain that they have a selection of desserts--maybe they have one or more with coffee as an ingredient.
