You are not alone. I have had kindles since the first the K1 and up to now the Oasis2. And I still miss this feature. I too wish they would add it as an option in the menu. Wouldn't bother anyone, just another toggle between locations, time left, pages and progress bar. I have written kindle feedback multiple times over the years asking for it. Oh well. And yes, you could actually see how much you read as you progressed with the arrow. It was and still is brilliant in its simplicity to give all that info in one long line. Chapter dots. I could see right there how far away I was from a chapter.
Now I use pages or time left in book. Neither of them is as satisfying as the progress bar though. Whenever I take out my basic with buttons to charge it I go and read on it just so I can experience the progress bar and the nice screen with super contrast. Daytime only of course now with my eyes. And those are also still my preferred buttons on the side too.
Lately I been having issues again with time left in book not sticking. It used to work always for my, until a few updates ago. Was always spot on. Now I keep having to reset it no matter what type of book I read. No rhyme or reason to it. And many books for some reason do not have a page number.
Considering that having anything down there you always have at least 2 items, the progress bar wouldn't fill out anymore than that really.
