There are a lot of us using Kindles in my retirement home. I've been using them since 2009. One of mine has no case so I always turn it on and off with the button. I've always kept one without a case and I've never had a problem.
If you're worried you can use a case and the Kindle goes to sleep when you close the case and wakes up when you open it. But really I don't think it's something to worry about. I've never heard of anyone with a Kindle power button failing.
