BUT there may be another way to arrive at your goal.
Make a Virtual Library based upon the status #read:false and formats:true
( #read is the name I used for my read DATE column , the formats true is because I keep empty books for both my paper library and my wishlist.)
Now the tag browser will NOT show any Author (or any other tag) for the books that have been read
