You can download .aax from Audible.com and side-load to /documents folder. It works just fine. But there’s no mp3 support.
Unlocked Android phones can be had as cheaply as Fire, e.g. for $39:

One would add SD storage of course. The size is much more portable than a Fire tablet, which is more ideal for audiobooks. And with Google Play App Store, you could install library apps that are not available on Fire from Amazon AppStore (I think the only one there is Overdrive, the rest you have to side-load).
