By beefier, do you mean mp3 deadicated/coprocessor(s) hardware? Do cheap mp3 players have the beefier hardware?
I thought a lot of this stuff was basically "free", but just wasn't implemented. For example most wifi chips on e-readers have Bluetooth support, but the Bluetooth isn't implemented/exposed to the user.
