The import/export option is the right way to do a backup. In the past, I just dragged a copy of the library to an external hard drive, and that worked, but then it doesn't save any of the features you added. Perfectly fine if you were having some sort of problem with your Calibre install, but way more work then needed otherwise especially if you are operating Calibre on two computers - you typically want the same preferences.
