I purchased a DRM removal kit because I can divide a book into roughly one-hour (CD sized) parts that way. My Sansa Clip plays Audible books as one item, but only indicates elapsed time; the progress bar isn't really exact enough to give me an idea of how much of the book I have left to go.

I have about 15 books that have been discontinued for sale, but they still reside in my Audible account. Imagine trying to start Diskworld and being unable to listen to book 1, as is currently the case. Fortunately I bought it when it was available and it is still there nestled in my library.
I won't know what devices will be available in 4 years and what devices I currently have that will fail, but at least I will have a way of listening to what I bought.
