Vance, Louis Joseph: Terence O'Rourke, Gentleman Adventurer (1905); v1

This 1905 novel was "fixed" up from four stories originally published in Street & Smith's "The Popular Magazine". (The author explains the process in a short introduction).

O'Rourke, gentleman adventurer, is first involved in a disastrous episode entitled "The Empire of Illusion", in which the tiny duchy of Grandlieu attempts to establish a colony in a small unclaimed wedge of West Africa; this is followed by three shorter adventures in, respectively, Cairo, Tangier and Grandlieu itself.

In the first story O'Rourke meets the love of his life, Princesse Beatrix, of Grandlieu.

This book was followed by a further O'Rourke adventure: The Pool of Flame, 1909, already in this Library.
