I think that one of the reasons for that is that here, when a book is adapted for TV, it's a self-contained adaptation in 6 episodes (or whatever). My impression is that US TV wants to milk the property for all it's worth and plans 10 seasons of 26 episodes each (and then cancels it after the first season
).
