Your monitor brightness looks way, way too bright - not only does your comment say it all but it is also obvious from your attached image. I would suggest turning it way down; your eyes will adjust.

If you have been playing around with any of the monitor's RGB, gamma, brightness, contrast, etc. settings I would suggest doing a reset to factory settings and start from there, adjusting brightness only (usually lower is required) unless you have the experience required to calibrate monitors by eye.

I use multiple monitors and, like others have said, I have no problems at all with Calibre or any other application with "white" backgrounds.
