I can't see that there's anything to stop (except possible support issues) Fictionwise accepting Kindle serial numbers and doing the conversion on their server, to make it transparent to the user.

It doesn't work. I tried doing this, entering my Kindle PID as one of my mobipocket choices in Fictionwise. I ended up with an 'invalid PID' on my mobi list and never could remove it.
I'm guessing that Fictionwise's contract with Mobi requires that the entered PID be validated back to them, and Mobipocket recognized that this was a Kindle PID and said 'no'
