You're still running calibre 2.22
That was the problem. I managed to have several versions of Calibre in my Applications folder, and even though I downloaded the latest version of Calibre the old versions hung around and were the ones that started from the desktop icon. Deleted all versions of Calibre and loaded the latest and all is food.
