I played around with creating a custom column that would do what I (and the OP) want. After some tinkering I got quite satisfying results. Here's what it looks like in my Calibre library.
I also fiddled with my metadata plugboard and got it working with the new column, but in the end I decided to stay with the old template (mainly because I don't want to send all my omnibus editions to my kindles again).
