In Calibre the authors name is entered using the format lastname, firstname
ARAIR, Kobo's firmware uses the , as the divider for multiple authors. So you are sending your example as a book with two authors, one named H. G. and the other named Wells.

Keep the author name in calibre as FN LN and default the author sort column to LN, FN. The Quality Check plugin has an option under fix to swap LN, FN to FN LN (or vice versa).

So instead of showing Piper, H. Beam, you would enter H. Beam Piper and calibre will enter it in the author sort column as Piper, H. Beam. At times, a manual correction may be needed (L. Sprague de Camp defaults to an author sort of Camp, L. Sprague de but this can be corrected in the Manage Authors menu item (right click on Authors on the left column).
