iTunes keeps saying storage is full?

Hi. I'm back again with more questions and it only took a few days. Haha

Ummm, I have a 1st Gen iPad and I am using it on Windows. It is 16GB but of course with all software I have around 13/14GB to use. I am using this iPad solely for books so I told myself keep the books within 10GB. Which I did. If I am not mistaken I only added 8GB of books. But every single time I am done uploading all the books, even if I individually upload it like 10 at a time so both my computer and the iPad has time to process, it tells me that my storage is full.

Half way through the upload it tells me there is a few gigs left. Right at the end the "Date & Documents" and "Others" section of the storage spikes high and suddenly I get the message saying that my iPad needs a minimum of blahblah storage to sync. Now I can't upload anything else which makes me confused because I know I have space so....

What is Apple doing to me? My iPad does say I don't have the space but the question is what is taking up the space when I know I only uploaded 8 gigs of books.
