no different than wingdings and other font-dependent icons. Most of us in the bookmaking biz don't use those, for the same reason I've mentioned--you can't
FORCE people to view the font you want. The problem or challenge is the same, whether you're using bootstrap or not. It's not like a website, where you can force people to see what you wish.
ETA: Or, of course, he could simply be talking about the fact that later Bootstrap had svg Fontawesome icons. But SSDD.
