The latter yes. There has been a bit of discussion about this. You need tap and try and move the handle and release it. The next time you try it works as it did before (I nearly said "properly", but adjusting the highlights has always been terrible).

But, the initial highlighting was improved two or three firmware versions ago and I don't think it has gotten worse with this one.
