The House of Dies Drear by Virginia Hamilton is on sale for $1.99. It's a kids book, but it also won an Edgar award when it was published in 1968, so I figure it belongs.

Quote:
Ohio, 1968. Thomas Small, a 13-year-old African American boy, moves with his family into a house that was once part of the Underground Railroad. Once they move into the house, strange and scary things begin to happen. Thomas must explore secret rooms—and the secrets of lives lived centuries before, lives that tell the story of America’s troubled early years.
