This version of
The Jesuits' Church in G- is taken from
Tales from the German, which contains 17 stories by several German authors translated by John Oxenford (1812-1877) and C.A. Feiling for the Chapman and Hall 1844 edition. Three of the stories were by E.T.A. Hoffman, and were translated by John Oxenford.
This story is told in the first person by the author, and tells of a man working at a Jesuit church who is blessed and tormented by his sense of the sublime, and his remarkable abilities as a landscape and historical painter.
