When I reset one of my Kobos last year I went ahead and created an account for it with a fake email address. It was no problem at all. I'm not concerned with being spied on. I just couldn't remember the email address on my Kobo account since it's been several years since I've accessed it and it was easier to do this than try a few old email addresses.
