I'm not sure what you mean, but, I'm pretty sure that isn't correct. The Kobo devices show series information, and can sort on it. Books purchased and downloaded from Kobo will have it. But, you can use calibre to set the series info for sideloaded books. After that, there is no difference between how books with series info are handled.

Series info has been displayed on the Kobo devices for years. Series sorting was added in 2017 (maybe 2016). It is on all devices running firmware released since then. Effectively, everything from the Touch onwards.
