Amazon does not post a checksum for their file downloads, so the best thing to do is download the same file (renaming as you go) two or three times, then compare them, the checksum utility you use should give the same result on all of them.
Thanks I did look for the old firmware images in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=275877 but the links for the PW2 firmware are dead or require login. Is there an archive of old firmware versions somewhere?

It seems likely this could be what happened. I've been running my kindle on aeroplane mode for years. I'm sort of tempted to download and install the latest firmware from Amazon to see if it works but I don't want to brick it again and I've already put the case back together so would have to re-solder (pin method didn't work consistently for me). Maybe I will just leave as-is, I have created the fake directory to prevent further firmware updates.
