Actually my plan B was to use KindleLazy. In this case, I would have used an angled cable from micro-USB to USB A socket for plugging the receiver. Then remove the PCB from the presenter put it in a new housing and replace the existing switches with footswitches. However, the ESP option seemed like the easier way to go besides I always wanted to build something with an ESP.
