Manually down load 5.9.6.1 and update your Kindle to that version.

Then follow directions for 5.9.6.1 in the thread you linked to.

Being registered and ad-free only matters if you have to recover from a bad firmware update.
So it is your own choice.
Since your device is now out of warranty (for a free exchange if bricked) ...
