Where are you seeing the authors without books? The authors list is automatically built based on books on the device. I can think of two possibilities for getting authors with zero books, but, one requires an external SD card, and the other would be related to purchased books. As the Clara HD doesn't have an external SD card, and it sounds like you are only sideloading, I don't think either will be the case.

But, if you are creating collections for the authors, then there is an option in the KoboTouch driver to automatically delete empty collections.

The only other thing I can think of is something in memory that needs to be cleaned up. Restarting the device should solve that.
