I was told by someone who has one that for audiobooks, it's pretty much Audible or nothing, that it's only apps that are available from the Amazon app store and that sideloading apps has been a non-starter. But this was early days and perhaps it's changed.
And yes to the price. I'd be thrilled if one fell into my lap, but my Aerb does what it needs to and the price has amortized to about $7/summer. If I get another summer out of it, that will be about $6.
I can see that if one wants it for music, the ability to download a Spotify playlist could be compelling, for ease, randomness and selectability. But audiobooks last for hours and don't need scrambling, so it's harder to make a case. Loading a new book takes minimal tending.
