Telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve is an old, old tradition that has mostly died out. It lives on, of course in the lyrics of the song "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" ("There'll be scary ghost stories / And tales of the glories / of Christmases long, long ago") and, of course, in that most famous Christmas ghost story, A Christmas Carol.
