The best contrast I've seen is on the Nook Glowlight 3. I have it as well as a Paperwhite 3 and a Paperwhite 4. The Glowlight doesn't have the coating that's needed for the touch screen and that dramatically increases the darkness of the text. It has an infra-red touch screen.
That said, in every other way it's not nearly as good a device as my Paperwhites. It's a decent device with a superb screen while my Paperwhites are superb devices with only excellent screens.
My suggestion is get used to the Paperwhite.
