First off, it's a widespread misconception that using a Kindle you will be vendor-locked. Actually you don't have to buy anything from Amazon, you can sideload all your previously acquired books and purchases from other vendors. Of course the books must be DRM-free.
True, Kindles cannot read epubs, but it's trivial to convert DRM-free epubs to Kindle formats with Calibre. I have three Kindles in use at the moment, but I buy quite seldom from Amazon. All my books are sideloaded.
The Kindles would be out of the question only if you absolutely don't want to use Calibre.
