Crashes are never normal,
but there was indeed a bug that's been fixed, see
here.
You can grab a nightly build from
http://build.koreader.rocks/download/nightly/ right now or wait until the new binaries are ready for the 2018.12 release. There's no reason to wait though, because they'll be exactly the same as today's nightly.
