I heard it was to prevent accidental device waking up from sleep situations. Of course if you have a sleep cover and don't turn the device off the prompt doesn't appear when you wake the device by opening the cover.

I'm actually surprised that no one has asked our patch gurus to find a patch that would avoid the swipe requirement; I'd think it would be relatively easy to track down.
