I tried the Librivox dramatic reading but it didn’t work for me as well as I had hoped. That for The Secret Garden was much better. I switched to a solo reading by Karen Savage (Librivox again) and I found it to be very acceptable. Ms Savage reads with enthusiasm and feeling. One does have to put up with each chapter beginning with an announcement that “This is a Librivox recording. . . “ etc. and there is a background hum which is more evident on headphones than speakers. I did listen to B. j. Harrison’s version for the Classic Tales edition which certainly has a better sound but I think that the female voice is much to be preferred as Marguerite is the primary narrator in the book.

I may well try the McCaddon reading If I can get hold of it.
