Plot: John "Jack" Neiland is swept away as the end of the world comes, and then goes, and he finds that things aren't quite like the movies he's seen or games hes played.
Characters: Jack, his mentally imbalanced friend Ben "Crazy-legs" Lucas, the devout and headstrong Marie, Jack's agoraphobic brother Doug, and Jack's fearless terrier, as well as a strong supporting cast.
Setting: Post Nuke mid-America
Scene: An introduction to Jack.

When the end of the world came, it was in part what everyone had expected.
"And on this, one of the shortest days of the year, temperatures continue to plummet into record-setting territory," the forecaster, a middle-aged man with ruddy cheeks and hair that looked like plastic announced through the tinny speakers of the Zenith television that was strapped to a stand and bolted to the wall. Jack Nieland looked at the steam rising from the bowl of soup that sat before him, and poked at it with mild curiosity. It was true the soup was warm, and he wasn’t, but he was starting to wonder if something in it was still perhaps alive. Off behind him sat the blue plastic salad bar, which boasted yellowing lettuce, along with at least two different types of fruit, some home-made potato salad, Club crackers, shredded cheese that looked slightly slimy, as if it had seen better days, and imitation bacon bits.
