I think you might like them, Sweetpea. They're younger than Dahl and Ende, and written in a simple poetic form (meter and rhyme) and the art...well, the art is wonderfully bizarre, and the stories somewhat surreal and fantastic (as in "fantasy"). I'm not sure if one can appreciate them as an adult coming to them for the first time, though I suspect some adults of a certain taste could.
