Put it in a sealed bag with some crumbled newspaper, and leave it a few days. Change the paper daily.
Do the same using activated charcoal, or kitty litter.
I've had some plastic or rubber items over the years that never lose the petroleum based odor they emit. Usually a good airing out takes care of it.
