That's what I do. Except for the 'Transfer via USB'. I just use an older version of Kindle for PC and download the books by right clicking the cover and choosing 'Download'. They download as AZW3. A quick transfer to Calibre with Alf and I have DRM free books that I convert and send to my Kobo.
